Apple recently rolled out iOS 18.3, only to issue a follow-up update, iOS 18.3.1, less than a month later. For many iPhone users who have just updated, this might seem redundant, so why is Apple so adamant about needing their most recent version?
The reason behind these frequent updates is critical—without iOS 18.3.1, your device remains vulnerable to serious cyber-attacks
iOS 18.3.1
The original version of iOS 18.3 made iPhone vulnerable to attacks, with some users having been affected by them already. This is why Apple believes it is crucial for all users to update as soon as possible
USB Restricted Mode
Users have been notified of one security vulnerability, which could give someone access to your locked device via a USB cable. This issue was labeled as CVE-2025-24200 by Apple and discovered by Bill Marczak of The Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto’s Munk School.
This attack comes from a flaw in Accessibility, which would allow USB Restricted Mode to be disabled on locked devices.
USB Restricted Mode, introduced in iOS 2018, is a security feature that restricts access to data through USB and USB-C cables when your device is locked. This means if someone plugs a device into your phone, it should only charge the phone—not access or copy any personal data—unless they unlock your phone first.
Without this feature, if an attacker obtains possession of your device, they will be able to collect data from it without needing the passcode.
Because this is a physical attack, Apple has stated this has only been used against specific targeted individuals who could have extremely valuable information, such as government officials, activists, or journalists.
It is unlikely most of the population is a target for this type of attack, but if your device is lost or stolen, your information is still vulnerable, which should be avoided at all costs.
Other Vulnerabilities
Apple has not specified all security fixes they are implementing, in hopes hackers will not learn about these vulnerabilities and exploit them before users have a chance to upgrade their devices.
Apple Intelligence and Privacy Concerns
Previous iOS updates allowed users to opt out of Apple Intelligence. However, iOS 18.3.1 automatically activates this feature without requesting user consent. Many users are concerned about the privacy implications of Apple Intelligence, especially with Siri’s integration with ChatGPT. When Siri processes requests, data is shared with OpenAI, which might not follow the same strict privacy policies as Apple. This means there could be concerns over how personal data is used or stored.
If users would like to continue to opt-out of Apple Intelligence, it must be manually disabled by going to the Settings app > Apple Intelligence & Siri > then flipping the Apple Intelligence toggle off.

Importance of Updating and Upgrading Devices
Although updating your device may seem like a hassle, it is critical to ensure your phone remains secure and protected from vulnerabilities that could be exploited by hackers. Not only is it important to update your device, but upgrading to a newer model is part of keeping your information secure.
Devices that no longer receive updates, such as the iPhone 8 and earlier models, are particularly vulnerable. If a vulnerability in an older OS is discovered, security fixes will not be issued, meaning there is no way to protect your device. If your device is one of these, upgrading to a newer model is essential to stay secure.
Receiving an update prompt so soon after the previous one might feel repetitive, but iOS 18.3.1 addresses a critical security flaw that is already being exploited in real-world cyber-attacks. We strongly recommend updating as soon as possible; ignoring this update could leave your device and personal information exposed.
