Enterprise Security Level

Determining the level of managed cyber security integrated into the communications component involves identifying current email, internet, and telephone providers, along with any cloud services currently utilized, like iCloud, OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox. All of these elements, if not properly configured, represent a weak spot in your network security.

Man holding an open laptop displaying a Microsoft 365 dashboard in a modern office, smiling.
By Ivan Flores • May 14, 2026
Back in 2022, we posted a blog article called “Which Microsoft 365 Plan is Right for Your Business?” At the time, that was mostly a licensing conversation. Do you need desktop apps? Do you need Teams? How much storage do you need? Are you only using email, or are you actually using the Microsoft ecosystem? That conversation has changed so much it's unreal. Microsoft 365 is no longer just email, Office apps, Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint. For many small and medium businesses, Microsoft 365 Business Premium has become a practical cybersecurity and business risk reduction platform. That matters because a lot of companies are still running security the old way. They have endpoint protection from one vendor, email filtering from another, MFA somewhere else, device management maybe, personal phones with company email, and a few security tools nobody fully remembers buying but somehow still renew every year. That is not a security strategy, it is a junk drawer with invoices. The Problem with the Multi-Vendor Security Stack A multi-vendor security setup is not automatically wrong. In larger environments, it can make sense. Some companies need best-in-class tools for every layer of security. They have the internal IT team, cybersecurity team, budget, process, and time to manage those tools properly. Most small and medium businesses do not. For many SMBs, the multi-vendor security stack happened by accident. One product was added after a scare. Another was added during a project. Another came bundled with something else. Another was recommended years ago, and nobody has checked it lately. Over time, the business ends up with disconnected tools, different dashboards, different alerts, different policies, different agents, different renewal dates, and different vendors blaming each other when something breaks. So, the issue is not just cost, but the much bigger issue is operational drag. Complexity creates gaps. And gaps are where problems live. Antivirus Protection Alone Is Not Enough Anymore For years, many businesses thought cybersecurity meant having software installed on every computer. Install antivirus. Make sure the icon is green. Move on. That model is super outdated and don't get me wrong, endpoint and antivirus protection still matters, and every business needs protected devices. But modern cybersecurity is not just about what is installed on the computer. It is about identity, access, email, cloud apps, data, devices, user behavior, policy enforcement, remote work, personal devices, file sharing, and offboarding. A laptop can have endpoint protection installed and still be a major risk if the user has weak credentials, no MFA, unmanaged access to company data, no device compliance policy, and unrestricted access from anywhere in the world. Cybersecurity is no longer just about protecting the device. It is about protecting the user, the login, the data, the email, the session, and the device together. That is where Microsoft 365 Business Premium changes the conversation. What It Means to Move Security onto a Single Plane Moving security onto a single plane does not mean using only one tool for everything. That would be oversimplified, and oversimplified security advice is how companies end up with expensive regret. A single plane means your core security controls are integrated, visible, and manageable from one central ecosystem. It means identity, devices, email, files, access rules, and security policies are not all living in separate corners of the business pretending they know each other. A single-plane approach asks better questions: Can identity security connect to device security? Can device compliance affect access? Can email protection tie into the broader security environment? Can company data be protected based on who is accessing it, from what device, and under what conditions? Can onboarding and offboarding be handled consistently? Can IT actually see what is going on? That is my point. Not just more security tools, but better coordinated security. Why Microsoft 365 Business Premium Matters Microsoft 365 Business Premium matters because it brings together several security and management capabilities that many small and medium businesses used to buy separately. It includes: Microsoft Defender for Business for endpoint protection Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 for stronger email and collaboration protection Microsoft Intune for device management Microsoft Entra ID capabilities for identity and access control Conditional Access capabilities to control who can access company resources, from what device, and under what conditions It also brings in practical controls like multifactor authentication, self-service password reset, remote wipe, data loss prevention, sensitivity labels, secure file sharing, and policy-based access. The value is not just that Microsoft includes more features. The value is that these features are part of the same ecosystem. Identity can connect to device compliance. Device management can support access decisions. Email protection can support the broader security posture. Endpoint protection can be managed as part of the Microsoft environment. Security becomes easier to operate. For SMBs, that matters. A security product that nobody has time to manage is not really a security product. It is just another dashboard quietly collecting dust. Why This Matters to the C-Suite and Leadership For CEOs, CFOs, COOs, and other leadership teams, Microsoft 365 Business Premium is valuable because it changes Microsoft 365 from a productivity subscription into a practical business risk reduction platform. Most executives still think of Microsoft 365 as email, Office apps, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive. Useful, yes. Strategic, maybe. Cybersecurity foundation, not always. But Business Premium adds controls that directly affect business risk. Account takeovers: Multifactor authentication, Conditional Access Risky logins: Conditional Access, identity controls Helpdesk overhead: Self-service password reset Malware and ransomware exposure: Microsoft Defender for Business Unmanaged device risk: Microsoft Intune, device compliance Lost or stolen device exposure: Remote wipe Data leakage: Data loss prevention, sensitivity labels Unsafe file sharing: Secure file sharing controls Phishing and malicious links: Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 These are not just IT features. They protect revenue, reputation, operations, client trust, and business continuity. For leadership, the business value is simple: Tighter security Lower IT complexity Better compliance posture Faster onboarding and offboarding Fewer preventable disruptions A stronger baseline across the company And for companies under 300 users, the price point is unusually efficient compared to stitching together five separate vendors and hoping they all behave nicely together. Which, for the record, they often do not. The Goal Is Not More Software The answer to every security concern is not “buy another product.” Sometimes another product is necessary. Sometimes it is not. Many companies already own Microsoft 365 licenses, but they are not using the security capabilities available to them. Or they are on the wrong plan, usually Business Standard, and then paying for several third-party tools to fill the gaps. That can work, but it is often more complicated than it needs to be. For many organizations, moving to Microsoft 365 Business Premium can reduce the number of separate tools while improving the overall security foundation. That does not mean Microsoft replaces everything. It does not mean every third-party security product should disappear. It means you should evaluate: What you already have What Microsoft 365 Business Premium already includes What is duplicated What is missing What actually improves security The goal is simplification with purpose. Not simplification because we are tired. Not consolidation because it looks nice on a spreadsheet. Simplification because fewer disconnected systems can mean better visibility, better enforcement, better management, and fewer gaps. What This Looks Like in the Real World A typical business may currently have: Antivirus from one vendor Email filtering from another vendor MFA partially enabled Devices managed manually, if at all Users accessing company data from personal phones Files shared through whatever was convenient that day No consistent Conditional Access policies No central view of device health No clear standard for onboarding and offboarding No easy way to know whether a login, device, or user is risky That setup may look covered on paper, but in reality, it is fragile. Now compare that to a properly configured Microsoft 365 Business Premium environment: MFA is enforced Access is controlled with Conditional Access Devices are enrolled and managed Endpoint protection is active Email has stronger phishing and malware protection Company data can be labeled, governed, and protected Lost or stolen devices can be wiped Offboarding is more consistent Password reset can be safer and more efficient Security policies can be reviewed centrally That is a very different posture. Not perfect. But much better, way better. And more importantly, it is manageable. Business Premium is the New Baseline for SMBs & SMEs Yes, I said it, and I mean for ALL of the SMBs and SMEs out there. For many small and medium businesses using Microsoft 365, Business Premium should be the new baseline. Business Basic and Business Standard still have their place. They are fine for basic productivity. But if your business depends on Microsoft 365 for email, Teams, files, collaboration, and daily operations, then the conversation should move beyond productivity. The real question is not "What is the cheapest Microsoft 365 plan that gives us email and Office apps?", but instead the better question is: What Microsoft 365 plan gives us the security and management foundation we actually need? For many businesses, the answer is Microsoft 365 Business Premium because it is is designed for small and medium businesses up to 300 users. That makes it especially relevant for companies large enough to have real cybersecurity risk, but not large enough to run a full internal security department. Which is most companies. Licensing Alone Does Not Fix the Problem Now for the part everyone likes to skip. Buying Microsoft 365 Business Premium does not automatically secure your company. A license is not a strategy. You still need proper setup, security policies, MFA configured correctly, Conditional Access designed properly, Intune deployed correctly, device compliance standards, email security policies, data protection rules, backups, monitoring, and someone responsible for managing it. Microsoft gives you the platform. It does not magically make every good decision for your business. That part still requires planning, configuration, and ongoing management from a team like ours which you likely already have. Where Third-Party Tools Still Fit Moving security onto a single plane does not mean eliminating every other tool would be the wrong takeaway. Some businesses still need advanced MDR or SOC services, specialized backup solutions, advanced compliance tools, industry-specific controls, additional email security layers, or better reporting and monitoring than what comes out of the box. The point is not to remove tools just to remove tools. The point is to stop paying for duplicate tools, disconnected tools, underused tools, and tools that do not improve the overall security posture. A strong Microsoft 365 Business Premium foundation makes it easier to decide what else is actually needed. Start with the foundation. Then add what is missing. Do not start with a pile of vendors and hope a strategy appears. The Bottom Line The real opportunity with Microsoft 365 Business Premium is not just adding more features. The opportunity is reducing unnecessary complexity while improving security and lowering business risk. For IT teams, that means fewer disconnected systems to manage. For users, that means safer access with less friction. For leadership, that means lower operational risk, better visibility, stronger compliance posture, and fewer preventable disruptions. That is the shift: Less tool sprawl Better integration Stronger identity security Better device management Improved email protection A more complete security foundation For most small and medium businesses, this is where the conversation should be heading. Not more software for the sake of more software. Better security, fewer moving parts, and a platform that is actually manageable. That is the point.
